Guided Tour Reading Graffitti on the walls of Jerusalem

Last evening (Wed, July 3) Ellyn and I joined Marisa James who as well as being a friend from CBST and various other places I show up, has been an intern with Truah, Rabbis for Human Rights North America. As one of her projects she developed a tour of the political graffitti of Jerusalem. The tour was scheduled for new HUC rabbical students beginning their first year of rabbinical school with a year in Israel. (I will post some of the pictures next week but right now I wanted to just mention that such an activity exists.)

Some of the graffitti was simply beautiful art work but most were political, highlighting major social and political issues within the state of Israel and in the territories. Like editorializing about moving Bedounins is a certain area because their grazing land needed to used for military training. Or graffitti about housing shortages in Jerusalem. And then there were the ones that really could not be understood. Why a blue heart with the biblical quote from Genesis written on it, "take her and go" which is what Laban said to Eliezar when he wanted to take Rebecca back as a wife for Issac. I feel very grateful for the experience. Just think, we are two of a very special group of people.
